Sydney Rugby League - Club Photos 1908

1908 Rugby League Photo

The majority of the founding Sydney Rugby League premiership clubs adopted the jersey colours of their former rugby union clubs. While this may have been simply because the colours were recognisable in their local communities, it may also have been by necessity.

At the time, football jerseys were imported from England and period of over three months had to be allowed for their order and arrival.

A close look at the team photos below - all from the opening round (except Souths who were premiers) - show players in club jerseys in varying condition, few with badges and slightly different makes and designs. At the very least, it appears rugby league bagan with their players in old rugby union club jerseys!
