Magic
Moments of the '90s - DVD & Video
'Magic Moments of the 90s' covers each season from 1990 to 1999, ending with highlights of Melbourne's win in the Grand Final. While the eleven Grand Finals (including two in 1997) of the decade feature strongly in this DVD, the producers have kept a tight reign on each by endeavouring to keep to the critical plays and spectacular moments. Of course not all the 'magic moments' occur in Grand Finals - the real strength of the DVD is the highlights from during the season and in the play-offs. Most of these plays have rarely been seen again on TV and most recent video/DVD releases have confined themselves to Grand Finals. The producers have gone for a wide choice of what to include. Some are the spectacular - Brett Mullins' four stunning tries against Newcastle in '94 and Craig Wing's '99 sizzler for Souths against Cronulla. Milestones are included - Andrew Ettingshausen reaching 300 games, Terry Lamb's (not quite) last game at Belmore in '95, Melbourne's first ever game. Much of the most compelling viewing comes in the highlights of great semi-finals - and there are plenty of those on this DVD. The comeback of the Bulldogs against Parramatta in the Final of 1998 is still incredible to watch. Seeing clubs like Wests, Norths and Illawarra battling out finals matches reminds us of how things have changed - and how one tackle, one field goal or one mistake took these teams out of the Grand Final picture at a critical time. In watching Newcastle's Darren Albert cut down Norths' Matt Seers, who seemed certain to put the Bears in the '97 decider, you can't help but wonder what might have been for the Red and Blacks if they had have reached and won the Grand Final. The 1990s were a remarkable decade in the history of rugby league. Above all of it though, the football was spectacular and entertaining, and this DVD is a great record of some of the best.
