Castleford
Tigers Rugby League Club:
50
Greats
by David Smart and Andy Howard
from Tempus Publishing UK
Throughout
the ups and downs in Castleford's history, the club has always had top-class
players, and splendid characters.
The
pride of Castleford has been maintained throughout the changes that
the game of rugby league has undergone.
In
this book, the authors who produced Castleford: A Twentieth Century
History have compiled a detailed player profile of fifty great players.
As
well, the book is a player pictorial record compiled from a range of
sources. Many rare shots are included.
During
the good times, some of the game's greatest players have donned the
black and amber jersey. The list includes many greats:
Arthur Atkinson
Alan Hardisty
Roger Millward
Brian Lockwood
Les 'Juicy' Adams
Steve Norton
Kevin Ward
Gary Stephens
Malcolm Reilly
Lee Crooks
John Joyner
All
are regarded as being amongst the best the game has seen.
Also
featured are a number of Australians and New Zealanders including Ron
Gibbs, Richie Blackmore, Tawera Nikau and Adrian Vowles.
The much travelled Nikau in particular is revered by the Castleford
Tigers club and its fans.
After
leaving Melbourne in 1999, Nikau signed on with Warrington. His final
game on English soil was ironically against the Tigers at the completion
of the 2001 Super League season.
Even
though it was an away game for the Castleford fans - and Nikau was with
an opposing club - thousands of Cas supporters travelled from home to
pay tribute to the Kiwi before he retired.
