Featherstone
Rovers - 100 Greats
by Ron Bailey
(Tempus Publishing)
In
2001 an Images of Sport publication chronicled the story of the Featherstone
Rovers since its admission to senior rugby league in 1921. That story
(reviewed here)
covered its varied history of highs and lows set against the blackcloth
of a struggle for survival.
Now
available is a companion book - Featherstone Rovers: 100 Greats - which
covers n greater detail some of the great players who were part of that
story and their benign influence upon the Featherstone struggle for
survival.
The
Featherstone club is renowned throughout the rugby league game for its
extraordinary ability to produce a never ending talent stream from its
local juniors nursery. Many of these players have taken Featherstone
on one of their memorable Challenge Cup campaigns.
In
a mercenary sense, they have also ensured the survival of a club that
otherwise would have ceased to exist long ago - many young and promising
Featherstone players have been sold to other clubs in the dark times
that the club has needed an injection of income to make ends meet.
The
book features the profiles of many famous names in English rugby league
including Paul Newlove, Steve Nash, Don Fox, Deryck Fox, Jimmy Thompson,
Eric Batten, Joe Mullaney, Malcolm Dixon, Karl Harrison, Terry Clawson,
Jack Hirst, Graham Steadman and Jim Denton.
A
welcome addition to the 100 Greats Series, which is providing a wonderful
chronicle of the men that played the game of rugby league in England
over the past century.
