The modern game of rugby league has two sides to it - there are the countless thousands of supporters, and there are those that participate. Producing a book that will be of interest to both, and benefit everyone involved in the game is a difficult task.

The combination of Helen Elward (writer/historian/spectator) with the 'Immortal' Graeme Langlands (player/coach/legend) have done an admirable job in achieving what many would never attempt. 'Ozzy League' provides an insight into the game that will hold the interest of fans and aspiring players alike.

'Ozzy League' can be read for both enjoyment, and if you are young footballer - encouragement and inspiration.

"The book explores how the grass roots of the code are inextricably linked to the elite levels and this relationship is highlighted by the experiences and recollections of nearly a hundred people. A magnificent tribute to the game."
Colin Love - Chairman, Australian Rugby League

Players such as Andrew Johns, David Peachey, Braith Anasta, Brad Fittler, Darren Lockyer, Gorden Tallis and Nathan Cayless, discuss their love of the game, from schoolboy football and junior league, to making it in first grade, and finally playing for Australia.

They explain what is involved in playing in the various positions: what they enjoy, what skills are necessary and who are the toughest opponents. They also reveal who were their heroes and say which were the best tries they have seen scored.

Unlike the other football codes, rugby league allows players - and fans - to succeed at a number of levels. 'Ozzy League' reminds us all - through the thoughts of the players themselves - that in rugby league you can play for a NRL club, play State of Origin, and if you are really fortunate, achieve the honour of selection in the Kangaroos. Attainment of each of those levels is an achievement to be proud of, and one that provides personal and team rewards.

"State of Origin games are the pinnacle of rugby league. They are fast and furious from go to whoa; it's tough. It's every kid's dream to play first grade. But once you've achieved that, it's everyone's dream to play State of Origin" - Robbie Kearns

"You share a lot with each other on the field ... when you're in the trenches, so to speak, and you're calling on your mates and they're there for you straight away, you've got a bond of friendship that can last beyond football." - Jason Stevens.

Of interest to those wanting to be involved in the game, are sections that look at the life of rugby league photographers, commentators, coaching staff and others.

'Ozzy League' is a great manual for the game. There should be a copy in every school library.
