SOUTH SYDNEY RABBITOHSMoving
the Goalposts
by Mark Courtney It's
rare for me to get a book and read it straight through in one sitting.
But with this book too much of it was hitting home to put it down -
even though the South Sydney Rabbitohs were not my club.
Courtney has managed to express for many fans what it means to be a club's supporter. The tragedy is it took the game's "war" to bring about such a pouring out of truth and emotion. Everyone I know who has read this book says the same thing: "Its about South Sydney - but swap the names and places and its about my club!" That is what makes this book a must read. All the intangibles that you have felt through your life about being the fan of a club - your club - are put down in writing here. Why did you pick the club you did, how winning or losing effected your life for the next week, the triumphant seasons and the dark failures - its all here. But then it is taken away. Suddenly you are acting like a family member has passed away. Well that is exactly what happened to the supporters of the South Sydney Rabbitohs. You don't have to be a Souths or a League supporter to learn from this book - any fan of any club or team in any sport should read this book - and learn from it. Souths are back, but it was one hell of a test of faith for the loyal. Would you be up to it if it happened to you? Published by Halstead Press - ISBN 1 875684 49 2 |
