Saints:
The Legend Lives On
by Ian Heads (hardcover - 375 pages)
With
the rich and successful history that the St George Dragons possess it
should be impossible to put it down in a book and truly pay it the respect
it deserves. Well, it should be impossible - but somehow Ian Heads has
written a book that does do exactly that. This is a book that sparkles
and shines in the glitter of the traditions, triumphs and heritage that
few sporting clubs in the world can boast.
Saints:
The Legend Lives On is as complete a work that a supporter of a club
could dream of. This isn't just a book for one-eyed Saints though -
rugby league has always been your team and your opponent, and a fan
of any club will feel the "game" flowing through the stories
in this book.
Every
St George era is covered in telling detail along with a plethora of
fresh photographs uncovered from who knows where.
Spread
about the book are short articles on players, incidents and happenings
in bite-size chunks - pick the book up, open it any page and enjoy the
journey of the march of the Dragons.
The
great St George teams are all covered. Not just the teams of the record
11 titles run of the 1950s and 60s, but those before and after. A special
part of the book puts a face to those 11 teams by showcasing in full
colour the photographs of each premiership winning team.
The
Dragons have been born and re-born during their history and the book
delves into these times. From the recent creation of the St.George-Illawarra
Dragons, to the first season under the NSWRL in 1921 and back to the
fiery birth and death of the club in one tumultuous evening in 1908.
Every
club deserves its history to be re-told and presented in the way that
Ian Heads has done with St. George. Many clubs don't have the traditions
and heritage to allow such a book to be attempted.
Few
clubs though are "The Mighty St George Dragons".
