Warrington Rugby League
by Eddie Fuller and Gary Slater

100 Greats Series

from Tempus Publishing UK

Warrington Rugby LeagueWarrington Rugby League has had (somewhat surprisingly) many of the greatest players the game has ever seen wear its colours of primrose and blue. This latest addition to the 100 Greats Series has a lot more to it than I expected.

Warrington were one of the founding clubs of 1895 but their contribution to rugby league is often over-looked in favour of the current top Super League clubs. Yet a look at the Wire's players (now the Wolves) - and not just the Top 100 - reveals an astounding list of famous names.

This book pays tribute to each of the 100 Greats of Warrington by providing a player profile, photograph and stats. Most are a page, some are hard to contain within two.

In compiling the 100 players list the authors involved the fans of Warrington as well as their own recollections and research. The book is invaluable for Wire fans, but any rugby league supporter will gain from reading and securing this book in their collection.

Warrington's Jack Fish - 1898 to 1911Just take a moment to reflect on a few of the players paid tribute to in the book - Jack Arkwright Snr., Billy and Tommy Cunliffe, Dai Davies, Jonathon Davies, George Dickinson, Billy Dingsdale, Des Drummond, Bob Eccles, Jack Fish, Eric Fraser, Andy and Mike Gregory, Iestyn Harris, Cec Mountford (NZ), Alex Murphy, Paul Sculthorpe, Athur Skelhorne and George Thomas.

Add to that a few 'lesser knowns' from Australia: Brian Bevan, Harry Bath, Phil Blake, Les Boyd, Dave Brown, Bobby Fulton, Allan Langer and Bill Shankland.

The authors deserve special praise for producing a book that is immensely interesting. It is consistently that way throughout the entire 100 players. Putting a compilation together must be a frustrating task at times with some individuals being particularly difficult to find information on. Often this is reflected in the final result, leaving the odd player entry that tells little of the man's deeds, life and the circumstances.

Not so with the Warrington Rugby League 100 Greats book. It is the stand-out book in the series!
